Mountain Art

Before I took the plunge in to drawer slides, hinges and handles, I started out with easier wood projects that required very little hardware, easy 45° angles and some wood glue.  I am a huge fan of Etsy.  I love finding items from small family-owned businesses, and especially love supporting work-from-home parents that are attempting to raise children while making some extra income. If you have followed my previous blog, LivingSemiCrunchy, you know I go waaaaaay back to the Hyena Cart days. Hyena Cart was the era before Etsy came along. An online site that I often purchased my handmade cloth diapers for my daughter.  Almost 11 years later, and I continue to support these smaller businesses from all over the United States.  ...but, like most creative individuals, I started asking myself if I could make the things I was seeing online for an exuberant amount of money?! The answer was YES! That is how my rough draft of the 3 part Mountain Wood Wall Art came to be.  ...

DIY Nightsands

I wanted a narrow desk and couldn’t find exactly what I wanted.  Next thing you know I was building a pair of nightstands. If you don’t know me personally, this is a fairly accurate account of how my thought process goes. Most people have an idea, write it down, plan it out and execute it. I do all of those things with about 6-10 unnecessary steps in between each. I will eventually finish what I intended on starting, but there will be a dozen unfinished projects, 1-2 other projects I HAD to complete and no less than 450 pinned ideas on Pinterest for projects that would consume the rest of my entire lifetime. Yep, distracted easily.  So, my first real big project with drawers and rails and hinges (oh my!) were my nightstands. I followed Brad Rodriguez, from Fix This Build That, 3 drawer nightstand tutorial.  His tutorial was easy to follow, and I not realize till later this May have been a blog post of his from several years back. His current projects are more modern and u...

Wood Wall Art - Where it all began!

Geometric Wood Wall Art.   The project that snowballed my love for creating my own home decor and building all the things. Originally inspired by @AngelaRoseHome cheap $20 #DIYWallArt I eventually drew the plans from @Brepurposed blog post which was actually a backdrop to a floating bench in her laundry room.   I  started my project at my new favorite hangout, @HomeDepot, where I purchased a piece of precut 2x4 underlayment which was around $8. Then I decided to ditch the 1x2 common pine boards that were recommended and opted for some thinner 1/4” pine moulding.     My first error in judgement and the reason this project should be considered #RoughDraft! (More on this later) I brought my items home and started measuring the pieces based on the diagram I had printed out, starting with the four sides that would frame my project. I used my @DewaltTough miter saw you make 90° and 45° angle cuts. Once I had several pieces to start, I started glueing the pieces t...

MY first new tool!

Image
Tools. An investment, that if chosen properly, can last a lifetime. I have learned in my 39 years that not all things are made the way they used to be. Not just tools, but trucks, appliances, toys, etc.    So finding a well made tool that will last through all your projects and whatever wear and tear you put it through, is worth the time to research and possibly spend a bit more money for quality.  Many of the tools I use for projects had already been purchased by my husband. Long before he had a garage to organize with drawers and cabinets and pegboards, he had been collecting ratchet sets, drill bits and all the other things that (I thought only) men collect in garages. For years, I would roll my eyes when he would tell me about something he found on sale at Home Depot for a fraction of the cost. I would zone out when he explained why we needed a new impact drill or trays for sockets.    I never, EVER, imagined a day when it would be me researching tools or sc...

So many Rough Drafts

Image
Hi! Welcome to a fresh start, on a new blog. My name is Shannon, and I have been blogging since 2006 under LivingSemiCrunchy which began as a place to review natural baby and adult products. In the beginning I engaged my readers by posting reviews and offering giveaways to those that were interested in the products. Although I still LOVE using new and innovative natural and organic products, I have recently dove in to an entirely new hobby that I am so ridiculously excited about. Rough Draft Wood is my new blank page to showcase the many different DIY projects I have completed on my own, at home. My intentions are to increase my knowledge and experience with woodwork and the tools involved and perhaps over time we can see some of these Rough Drafts become full fledge pieces, worthy of listing to the public.  If you have read this far, THANK YOU! I am thinking hard about what project I will choose to showcase first.  Please make sure to follow my Instagram account, RoughDraftWo...
